The basics
- The SeaBus crosses Burrard Inlet between Lonsdale Quay and Waterfront Station in about 12 minutes.
- Sailings are usually every 10 to 15 minutes during the day, and less often in the evening. Check TransLink for current schedules and service alerts.
- SILA Childcare, at 332 East Esplanade Avenue, is about 1 km east of Lonsdale Quay: roughly a 12 to 15 minute walk.
Plan your day backwards from pick-up
Start with the centre's pick-up time and work back. Add up the walk to Waterfront, the wait for a sailing, the crossing and the walk to the centre. Then add a buffer for a missed sailing or a long day at work. Sailings in the evening run less often, so a missed one can cost you more time.
If your work day doesn't fit a standard schedule, ask about extended care. SILA will offer extended care before 8:00 am and after 5:00 pm.
Have a backup plan
- Add a second person to your child's authorized pick-up list: a partner, relative or trusted friend nearby.
- Ask the centre how to let them know if you are running late, and what its late pick-up policy is.
- Keep the centre's phone number and email saved in your phone.
- Know your alternatives if the SeaBus is disrupted, such as bus routes across the Lions Gate or Ironworkers Memorial bridges.
Make drop-off easier
- Pack bags the night before, including rain gear: North Shore weather changes fast.
- Keep goodbyes short and consistent. A familiar routine helps children settle.
- Give yourself enough time at drop-off to share anything educators should know, such as a bad night's sleep.
Questions to ask a centre near transit
- What are the exact opening and closing times?
- Is there a short-term spot for drop-off if you drive some days?
- Where can you leave a stroller during the day?
